You really shouldn’t need another excuse to head out to the Franschhoek winelands, just 45 minutes' drive from central Cape Town. But if the abundance of fine food, world-class wine and mountain views aren't enough, then the opening of a captivating new cultural hub should do it.
Just in time for the busy summer season, ‘Boschendal X Brundyn’ has opened in the historic Manor House of Boschendal wine estate, offering an inspired collection of contemporary works brought together by respected curator Elana Brundyn.
It’s a classic combo of old and new: a venerable estate dating back to 1685, coupled with cutting edge contemporary art from southern Africa and its diaspora. There is the graceful sweep of traditional Cape Dutch architecture, married with modern interiors. Plus, a renovation over the winter has created a space where you can move from the gallery exhibition to an intimate wine lounge for a glass of South Africa’s famous Cap Classique sparkling wine. And with Boschendal’s two restaurants right on the doorstep, it’s imagined as a destination for day trippers as much as art lovers.
‘Boschendal’s accessibility, beautiful location, and incredible facilities make it a draw card for people from near and far. It’s one of the many reasons this is not an exhibition space aimed only at an art audience, but at the general public,’ explains Brundyn. ‘Visitors might stumble on the space by chance, and then be intrigued by what they see.’
It’s also a perfect spot for a little souvenir shopping, with a carefully curated gallery boutique offering up maquettes (small sculptures) alongside books, artworks and homeware.
Boschendal X Brundyn opens with a solo exhibition by Peter Cohen – ‘Colour in Black & White’ – to offer a delicate exploration of contrast and line work. Also on display is Gabrielle Kruger’s solo show ‘Paint Innings’; a charming play on texture and colour. But Brundyn has created the gallery as a destination that will call for repeat visits, with an evolving roster of shows planned. November 2023 will see the space host a group exhibition featuring the likes of Igshaan Adams, Pierre Fouche and Lukhanyo Mdingi, while visual artist Lebohang Kganye takes pride of place with a solo show setting the stage for the 2024 Cape Town Art Fair (February 16-18, 2024).
