A teacher must be able to provide reasons and try to stir interest in the subject. My own child that is GT struggled with this in school. There were just some teachers he was willing to do the work for without an issue while others he hated attending the class.

I believe underachievement can be due to been afraid/not willing to risk failure, may feel helpless to control outcomes of efforts and may choose to put a limit of what he/she can do.
