Sharing what might make you uncomfortable and how to deal with it can help model behavior for your child

Giftedness is mischaracterized because it’s not conceptualized correctly. That information is shared. One foundational starting point is the cognitive tests that are norm specific and do not measure all areas of giftedness (and don’t acknowledge all people – it centers White Majority culture). I say this as a school psychologist who is gifted, diverse, and an empath myself. Unfortunately, there is a lot of politics and implicit bias involved to maintain equilibrium in systems, versus wanting to find out the truth of the phenomenon to support and help a gifted child fully embody their potential.

In short, information is shared, but giftedness overall is not understood. Currently, there is a very shallow understanding of giftedness.

I do wish there was more understanding of our issues. I was actually beaten for being “Too clever”, I retreated into myself and tried to be “normal”. When my daughter was identified as gifted I actually cried because I felt it was a bad thing and I was worried that whatever I did I would not be able to “protect” her. She is doing well though but it can be tough.

Why aren’t Teachers trained to identify, test and teach?
Why aren’t Parents notified of signs of Giftedness and or other Learning Needs – simple signs and symptoms listed on inside of School Journals and or Text Books?
