I am quite sure from everything I observed in his childhood that he has ASD, and yet we taught social skills and Theory of Mind quite explicitly throughout his childhood, and so he has become quite successful in masking his ASD traits at school. We parents get to see him “decompress” at home, and this can be challenging if a school event has caused the school routine to change significantly. He is testing in the top .001 percent of his peers on standardized exams with very high ceilings. My husband and I were competent students in our school days, but neither of us attended an elite university. I was curious how common it is for people with normal to moderately gifted intelligence to have an exceptionally gifted child. I hear that genetics has some bearing on intelligence of offspring, but I can’t help but think that my son’s academic success has more to do with some kind of genetic mutation or gestational event. We did everything we could so support his fulfilling his potential, but I assume most parents do that as well. Do parents of exceptionally and profoundly gifted children with ASD have neurotypical children who are of average intelligence, or are the other children simply gifted kids without the ASD traits? We only have the one child, so this point is a bit of a mystery to us. Was this some complete fluke of fate, or was there some combination of genetics and random chance that came into play here?

I have a better understanding of what needs to be done to help my child to achieve academically and become a fully functional adult and socially integrated person. Thank You Let me know how I can get help from a distance as I currently live in Jamaica. My child 13 years heading to grade 10 in September.
