Merci, Paris's latest concept shopping sensation, is housed in an elaborately reconfigured 19th-century fabric factory. Inside, three loft-like floors heave with furniture, jewellery, stationery, fashion, household products, childrenswear and a haberdashery. That's not all. In a move that takes the trend for retailer responsibility to a new level, this most generous of general stores gives a decent chunk of its profits to charity.

Enter via the literary café and browse through the impressive book collection, or enter directly from the courtyard into the sprawling main hall where you’ll find everything from flowers to perfumes, pet accessories, videos and clothes. Upstairs, you’ll find clothing, accessories and a selection of design furniture. You're bound to work up an appetite, so it’s a good thing the adjoining canteen serves lunch.
