Time Out Market Lisbon has received the international Hamburg Foodservice Award at a ceremony in Hamburg today.
The Hamburg Foodservice Award is one of the most respected and desired European awards in the gastronomic and catering industry, considered the "Oscar" of the sector. Time Out Market Lisbon was honoured with this years’ award as “one of the most visionary concepts in the European foodservice sector”.
Time Out, the global media and entertainment business, turned a historic market hall in Lisbon into Time Out Market, opening its doors in May 2014. A place that previously housed the city’s top vendors is now the world’s first food and cultural market bringing the best of the city together under one roof: its best restaurants, bars and cultural experiences, based on the editorial curation Time Out has always been known for.
A once neglected building and neighbourhood was turned into a popular attraction for both locals and travellers and hundreds of jobs were created. Visitors can choose from 32 restaurants and kiosks offering the city’s best food, enjoy drinks from eight bars and cafes, buy from five shops or attend cooking workshops in the Chef’s Academy or events in the Time Out Studio. Time Out Market Lisbon is also the only food hall with three Michelin-star chefs – proof of the high-quality fine-dining that Time Out Market makes affordable and accessible for all.
Since its opening, Time Out Market quickly has become a huge success story. With 3.6 million visitors in 2017, Time Out Market Lisbon is now arguably the most popular attraction in the city. It is a hugely successful format (revenue was up 60% YoY in 2017, on top of 115% in 2016) which Time Out Group plc is now rolling out to other cities around the globe as part of its growth strategy; plans are on track for new markets which have been recently announced in Miami (set to open in 2018), Boston (2019) and Chicago (2019) and the Group is scoping locations in other cities around the world.
"Time Out Market is a Portuguese idea that is being replicated all over the world. This award represents the effort of the team in Portugal that came up with and believed in this idea, who are dedicated every day to ensuring that visitors find the best of the city together under one roof. In 2017, we welcomed 3.6 million visitors, which makes this market the most visited place in the city, of which we can only be proud,” says João Cepeda, President and Creative Director of Time Out Market.
Launched in 1983, the Hamburg Foodservice Award has distinguished many people, concepts and spaces in Europe. Among the award-winners are the likes of Sir Terence Conran, concepts such as Prêt-a-Manger, Vapiano and Wagamama and large catering and retail groups such as McDonald's, Migros and Blue Elephant. The awards are awarded by a panel of industry experts and representatives from across Europe.
