Discover the incredible story of an Australian marine pioneer at the Maritime Museum’s newest exhibition

The weather is warming up, but there are plenty of ways to cool off this summer, including at the Australian National Maritime Museum’s chilling new underwater exhibition. Valerie Taylor: An Underwater Life is more than just a tribute to one of the world’s most celebrated underwater storytellers, shark researchers and conservationists. It’s a call to action for all environmental enthusiasts and future changemakers to protect our beautiful oceans, their animals and their habitats from further threat.

Dive straight into 60 years worth of stories as told through objects and ephemera donated by Valerie and her husband Ron Taylor, including cameras and underwater housings, Valerie’s iconic blue fins and dive suits, and the stainless-steel chainmail suit she wore to get up close and personal with sharks. You can also admire Hollywood movie posters from the past fifty years including Jaws and The Island of Dr Moreau, plus more than 500 images from the Maritime Museum’s collection of animals, people and places now under threat.

Valerie Taylor: An Underwater Life is one of the headline exhibitions in the Maritime Museum’s rich summer program and will open on November 30 and run until August 31, 2024. You can purchase a ‘See It All Ticket’, which also includes access to all permanent galleries, all museum vessels, and special exhibitions including the Ocean Photographer of the Year and Wonderwater. Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for concessions, $15 for kids under 15 and free for children under four. Get yours here.
